Norton Ghost 15

The update of Symantec Norton Ghost 15 substantially improves one of the most capable disk-imaging programs on the market.
Some of the new features in Symantec Norton Ghost 15 are of interest only to business IT managers, while others will appeal to consumers. And all of the enhancements make this a powerful tool for anyone serious about backup and recovery.
For the average user, Windows 7 support, Blu-ray disc burning, and a feature Symantec has dubbed "cold imaging" are the most intriguing new features in Symantec Norton Ghost 15.
Though most imaging products have offered cold imaging - the ability to create a backup image using the recovery CD - for years, it's certainly a welcome addition to Symantec Norton Ghost 15. (We've complained for ages about the feature's absence from Ghost and other Symantec imaging products.)
Symantec Norton Ghost 15's version of the feature, which copies only entire partitions, performed quickly and perfectly in our tests. A notable annoyance: you must enter the program serial number each time you use the feature. Recovery doesn't require a serial number.
The only real drawbacks with Symantec Norton Ghost 15 relate to using the Windows Preinstallation Environment (PE)-based recovery CD. It's slow to boot, but more significantly it requires 1GB of RAM. While that may not seem like a lot these days, plenty of PCs top out at 512MB or less.
Unfortunately, the recovery CD has severe limitations, too. Once upon a time, in lieu of creating an image, Norton's recovery CDs offered a file browser that allowed copying at the file level. The browser is still there, but all file functions have been disabled. We wish Symantec would reinstate the file functions and stop assuming the worst of its users, who deserve to be treated as valued customers and not pirates.

IT managers in small and medium-size businesses will appreciate Symantec Norton Ghost 15's ability to schedule conversion of images to VMware ESX 3.5i/4.0i and 3.5/4.0 virtual machine format. The new version also offers support for Microsoft's Hyper-V virtual server format.
OS Compatibility: Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 7

Symantec Partition Magic v8

Symantec Adds Norton PartitionMagic 8.0 to Its Award-Winning Family of Products

The Industry's Best-Selling PC Disk Partitioning Software Earns Coveted PC Magazine Editors' Choice Award

CUPERTINO, Calif. - June 1, 2004 - Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), the global leader in information security, today announced Norton PartitionMagic 8.0, the newest addition to Symantec's family of award-winning solutions for consumers. Norton PartitionMagic 8.0, which Symantec obtained through the acquisition of PowerQuest Corporation, has been a worldwide leader in the partitioning utility category since its introduction in 1995 and recently earned the coveted PC Magazine Editors' Choice designation for partitioning solutions in the June 8, 2004, issue of the publication.
Norton PartitionMagic 8.0 lets users create, resize, move, split, merge, undelete and convert disk partitions quickly and easily while protecting the integrity of their data. Now Symantec customers can benefit from the product's power to separate and protect user data and system files, optimize PC performance and run multiple operating systems. Users also benefit with larger partition support, which gives them the ability to create partitions up to 300 GB when the partition is less than 90 percent full.
"Hard drive partitioning is an essential part of system maintenance. It prevents conflicts, protects data, improves efficiency and increases performance," said Don Kleinschnitz, vice president of product delivery, enterprise administration, Symantec Corp. "The addition of Norton PartitionMagic 8.0 to Symantec's line of solutions strengthens our commitment to protecting and improving consumers' computing experience."
Disk partitioning reduces the risk of data loss if the system crashes as each partition works just like a separate hard drive. Separating data into smaller partitions also helps improve a computer's efficiency and simplifies backups. Norton PartitionMagic 8.0's ability to divide the data and OS portions of a computer's hard drive makes maintenance functions, such as disk scanning and defragmenting, run much faster. The user interface offers an easy-to-use file browser that allows users to browse, copy or move files and folders from one partition or OS to another. Users can also manage files in hidden partitions. A step-by-step wizard provides a guide to performing partitioning tasks and viewing pending operations before implementing them.
Norton PartitionMagic 8.0 supports various file systems (NTFS, FAT 32, FAT, Linux Ext2 and Linux Ext3), allowing users to load and run multiple operating systems, or even multiple versions of the same operating system, on the same computer without conflict. This is a helpful tool for those who want to try a new operating system without giving up their old OS. A helpful wizard walks users through the process of setting up another OS. BootMagic, a tool included in Norton PartitionMagic 8.0, lets users choose which OS the computer will boot up in the next time the system starts up.

Easily organize your hard drive
Symantec's Norton PartitionMagic 8.0 lets you easily organize your hard drive by creating, resizing, copying, and merging disk partitions. Separate your operating system, applications, documents, music, photos, games, and backup files to reduce the risk of data loss if your system crashes. You can use Norton PartitionMagic 8.0 to run multiple operating systems safely.
